Marijuana plant has two main components; these are the THC and the CBD (cannabidiol oil), even though it comes from the marijuana plant CBD is pure of toxic stimulant components, unlike THC. Despite the controversy between the two components because if the general marijuana abuse, there is a growing awareness of CBD benefits. Researchers have come out with six medical benefits of CBD.

(1) Anxiety relief

Anxiety is a mental disorder described by feelings of worry which can largely interfere with patient’s living with constant anxiety attacks. Anxiety is said to interfere with the brains receptors called serotonin, a chemical that manages and regulates mood and social behavior.

In a research, a group of 24 patients with anxiety disorder were each given 600 mg of CBD oil before giving a speech test. The group significantly showed less anxiety thus giving a perfect speech performance, also a study done using animals and it showed that CBD help reduce anxiety on dogs and cats by,

  • Reducing stress
  • Reducing sleep in case of insomnia
  • Managing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Reducing physiological effects of anxiety for example increased heart rate

(2)  Anti-seizure

CBD oil has been known for years as a possible cure for epilepsy although research is still being done it has shown some positive results, researchers are now testing on the dosages to be given to patients that are able to reduce the number of seizures in people suffering from epilepsy. A research conducted by The American Epilepsy Society shows that CBD offers relieve for patients suffering from seizure disorders and research is currently going on to understand proper and safe ways of usage

According to a study conducted back in 2016, 2-5mg of CBD added to daily anti-epilepsy medications by the participants and given to epilepsy patients. The patients were monitored for two weeks and they showed no side effects, however, patients recorded 36.5 percent fewer seizures effects per month despite severe effects in 12 percent of the patients.

(3) Neuroprotective

Studies are being done on a receptor found in the brain, to learn about different ways in which CBD could help patients with neurodegenerative disorders, a disease caused when something goes wrong in patient’s nervous system which often affects senses, mood and memory of the patient.

Studies are currently being done on the use of CBD oil in treating the following diseases

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease

Additionally, research has been done on animals using test-tubes have significantly shown to reduce inflammation and help prevent neurodegeneration disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. However, more research is needed to fully understand potential effects on neurodegenerative disorders.

Recently, research has shown that CBD is responsible for pain-relieving, its effects on the brain receptors may help in reducing pain. Studies show that someone can benefit from CBD oil if taken after chemotherapy treatment, some pre-clinical agencies done by National Institute of Health are also researching on the part of Marijuana relieving symptoms caused by the following disorders paly,

  • Arthritis
  • Chronic pain
  • MS pain
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Muscle pain

However, THC and CBD combined to produce a sclerosis drug known as Nabiximols (Sativex) which is approved in Canada and United Kingdom to treat MS pain. Studies also show that CBD as a drug can is produced as an anti-inflammatory property rather than acting against pain, nevertheless a comprehensive research should be done on this drug to determine whether be used to manage pain.

(5) Anti-acne

Acne is a skin disease that affects 9 percent of our population; oiling

  • Overproduction of sebum (an oily secretion produced by glands in the skin)
  • Underlying inflammatory
  • Bacteria
  • Inheritance from genetics

The recent scientific research shows that CBD oil can be used to treat acne because of its anti-inflammatory components and ability to decrease sebum production, despite the promising results more studies should be done on effects of CBD on acne

(6) Cancer treatment

Scientific studies have recently investigated the role of CBD in preventing cancer cell growth although the research is still in its early stages, however, there are reports from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) says that CBD oil may reduce symptoms related to cancer and also side effects shown by cancer treatment. CBD has shown its ability to treat cancer by reducing inflammation also reducing the ability of tumor cells to reproduce.

How to use CBD oil

The oil is produce by marijuana plant either in powder or oil gels; they can also be made into capsules and taken orally or powdered on your skin. They are also made into liquid which are then sprayed directly into the mouth, mostly, the oil procedure of usage depends on the purpose of its use however you should consult your doctor before taking CBD oil because The CBD oil has not been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use and can cause serious side effects.

Though CBD is considered good by many people it can cause severe reactions to some people, its side effects include

  • Depression
  • Hallucination
  • Dizziness
  • Withdrawal symptoms, which include irritability and insomnia
  • Low blood pressure

A comprehensive research is needed in order to fully understand the wide range of effects CBD oil can cause to the human body, the Marijuana studies are limited because it is highly regulated thus bringing a lot of obstacles to the researchers but if it is legalized more studies can be done and we can understand the effects effectively.

Is CBD oil legal?

Although CBD oil is not legal in most countries, the United States has legalized it in some states but the users are required to apply for a special license, it is also important to note that FDA has not approved CBD for any medical use.
