We discussed the minute differences between THC and CBD n a previous article entitled “Cannabidiol’s Chemistry”, and how this affects their binding with CB-1 or cannabinoid receptor-1.

These variances can have big reactions that are subject to multiplication that can affect someone biologically. The structure of the cannabinoid is essential in determining how it functions. This is just like how molecular structures control protein binding, how protein movements define actions of cells, and how neuron network structure regulate how we behave physically. All of these are scientifically measurable factors.

The difference in structures between THC and CBD mean that they also have opposing effects. Their behavioral variances have been subject to scientific research, along with how CBD affects THC’s produced actions. fMRI, or functional magnetic resonance imaging, was even used in one study. MRI is a well-known method for imaging. This lets doctors observe what is in our bodies through the water inside us, with the use of big magnets. fMRI is similar to this, except that it gives us a movie instead of an image, with functions changing as time passes. The activation and inhibition of parts of our brain are visualized through an fMRI by highlighting active areas on monitors. People doing research can give subjects drugs and see how this affects the activity of the brain in actual time.

Additionally to the use of fMRI, psychological experimentation was performed on people who participated in the research. This was to examine four cognitive areas that are related to smoking weed. These areas of cognition are as follows: emotional processing, sensory processing, response inhibition and verbal memory. The development of these experiments were refined for several years, thus assuring that behavioural changes triggered by stimuli (like weed) are measured objectively.

Dr. Sagnik Bhattacharyya led the research studies, which aimed to measure how CBD and THC affect behaviour differently. The studies were conducted with the use of capsules that contain 600 milligrams of CBD, 10 milligrams of THC, and flour as a placebo. To get the baseline as a safeguard that any behavioural changes are actually caused by the drug, the flour placebo was used.

The introduction of drugs was done by distributing them in a partially random manner using a study of the double-blind type. This kind of study assures that nobody knows which capsule contains the placebo or the drug. Three psychological tests were conducted, as follows: PANSS, STAI and VAMS. The results of these three exams were all in accordance with each other.

The results drawn by the CBD capsules were exactly the same as the placebo capsule. It did not affect physical behaviour in any way at all, thus drawing the conclusion that it cannot give someone the “high” we can get from THC.

THC, on the other hand, elicited responses that caused behavioural changes, which was evident in the effects of the three tests.

To show what was going on inside the human brain, the people conducting the study did fMRIs on the subjects.

As we’ve discussed before, the baseline was achieved by getting the fMRI of people who took the placebo. This shows the standards of conduct of someone who was not intoxicated. In viewing the 6 brain regions that are primarily influenced when taking weed, THC and CBD both acted on these areas, except they just had very different results.

THC lowered the activity of the part of the brain in charge of muscle memory, which is called the occipital lobe. The occipital lobe’s activity heightened when CBD was given to the participant.

It is quite a subject of interest that even if two things are extremely similar, minor changes cause them to have distinctly different reactions in the same receptor.

There could possibly be varying reasons not covered by this study that are the cause behind the changes in effects of CBD, but we have two things we can be certain of currently.
