Cannabis laws were first made for medical usage in the latter half of 1990 when it was found that the substance is helpful in treating cancer patients. Cannabis served as a medication for cancer patients fighting with post-treatment issues. Though many countries are still against the commercial use of cannabis, here, we are interested to understand how cannabis can treat nausea and vomiting.

Nausea may come with other causes like motion sickness, overeating, emotional stress, cancer and as a side-effect of certain medications. It is a symptom that causes uncomfortableness and vomiting. Nausea and vomiting are due to short-term changes within the body that can be therapeutic but are miserable too. Pure CBD Manufacturers have found that cannabis is useful in treating nausea more effectively than any other pharmaceutical prescription. After chemotherapy treatment, almost every cancer patient face the side-effects including nausea and vomiting. Though many anti-sickness medications are there for such issues the thing is such medicines do not work for everyone all the time. Seeing its effectiveness in treating therapeutic disorders, THC(delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) – the active ingredient of cannabis has been declared as an anti-sickness medicine in certain countries. Chemotherapy-induced nausea is not something comparable with normal nausea, it is severe- the dreaded side effect that occurs within 6 to 24 hours or more after the chemotherapy treatment.

There are many pharmaceuticals that are used or prescribed to patients including- Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid that possesses anti-inflammatory properties and 5-HT3(Serotonin receptor agonists) that have been used with Dexamethasone for effective treatment of nausea and vomiting. In fact, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and antihistamines have been found effective in treating post-treatment side effects. But most chemotherapy patients have reported that these traditional drugs have induced to them a feeling of delusion, drugged and lethargic. Such issues have shown that these traditional medicines are not alleviating the symptoms for all patients instead they put them in problems.

The Science Behind Cannabis Treating Nausea

The cannabinoids like THC and CBD influence the body system and plays an important role in activating the biological changes. These compounds are similar to the endocannabinoid system of the human body. Once, the compound is ingested, it activates the receptors site leading to the normal biological system. The cannabinoids possess anti-emetic and anti-nausea properties. It matches up with the receptors’ site and produces favorable results.

CB1 and CB2 are the primary receptors of the endocannabinoid system. Among the two, CB1 is found in higher amount in the brain than other sites and CB2 is found in neurons of immune cells. The agonist of CB1 receptor suppresses vomiting whereas antagonist of CB1 does the reverse of it. Experiments on animals have shown that cannabinoids are more effective than conventional pharmaceuticals as the use of cannabinoids on rats & mice showed the positive result for controlling the effects of nausea. The cannabinoid activation to CB1 receptor blocks both acute and delayed emesis after chemotherapy. Cannabinoid receptors disrupt the signals of the brain making the patient calm down for a while. It blocks the sensation that comes from nausea or that makes the patient feel uncomfortable or an urge of vomiting.

Does cannabinoid make you feel high?

Though a lot of research is still needed for exploring the medical value of cannabinoids, it has been found that cannabinoids do not actually make you feel high rather it relaxes you while uplifting your mood, relaxing your mind and remove anxiety. However, such positive results are expected if the dosage is not too intense. It has been seen that the acidic compound of raw CBD called, CBDA is more active at serotonin receptors and posits that CBDA is more effective anti-emetic compound than THC and CBD. CBDA is found in CBD-rich plants but the compound is available in its form before drying the plant. Just like, heating of THCA converts it into THC, CBD is also obtained by heating the source of CBDA. The best way to get CBDA is the extraction of fresh juice from CBD-rich plant like the Cannabidiol Private Label Manufacturers are doing. But, due to various ‘yet to research properties’ of cannabis plants, the freedom in terms of its usage is still limited. And this is why doctors usually recommend the traditional medicines first and if the body does not respond positively then cannabis is included in prescription.
