Imagine yourself in a scenario where you are very close to perhaps facing a deadline, maybe your assignment is due tomorrow and you have not yet even started to work! Or perhaps you have graduated from University, but you are not able to get even a single job anywhere! During these kinds of intense moments, what do you feel?

A surge of emotions starts to perspire all around you which catapults your heart beat sky high and sends you to a temporary emotional roller coaster ride. The feeling which you get during such circumstances where you are put under high mental pressure is called “Stress”.

It is simply the bodies physical response to any situation where the brain might think that the body might be in danger, or even if it thinks that the body is about to go through a lot of sudden compulsion. The type of stress experience has been defined into three categories which fall under either Fight (The human body’s response to ward off predators), Flight (The Human body’s response to move away from a harmful situation) and lastly Freeze (In which scenario the human body fails to comprehend and respond to the situation at the same time, and freezes on spot), and all of these responses are triggered by the release of an amalgam of hormones such as adrenaline, cortisol and norepinephrine.

While there are lots and lots of synthetic medicines out there who are doing a tremendous job in undermining the mood swings caused by stress, prolonged usage of such said medicines tend to induce some seriously high level side effects, and that is exactly why people these days are slowly leaning more and more towards CBD treatments.

The Endocannabinoid System of the Body

You have to know this that there are certain neurotransmitters which mechanize and control moods such as anxiety, stress and fear which are exclusively controlled by monoamine such as dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine. Most of the synthetic medicines out there tend to make their course of action by targeting these “monoaminergic” systems, but they highly lack the required attributes to effectively apply the desired effects.

Does cbd help with stress? Scientists nowadays have started to look the other way and have discovered that the Endocannabinoid System of the body is much more closely linked to the responses associated with fear and anxiety. This system, in a nutshell is comprised of CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. The activities such as synthesis and breakdown of the Cannabinoid compounds are controlled by biochemical mechanisms that are governed by the structures of the brain which are also known to control stress and fear such as the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus and periaqueductal gray.

Does CBD help with stress? Human trials on this subject matter came a lot later, initially tests were carried out on Mice which were injected with anandamide, the results were pretty good and very significant decrease in the “fight” or “flight” phenomena were observed.

But there was a catch! Things were not as much straightforward as they seemed to be. There seemed to be paradoxical response in some animals as when cannabinoid injections were utilized, instead of decreasing the feelings of stress, it seemed illicitly promote the feelings and increase them.

It appeared that while lower dosages were able to reduce stress, higher dosage seemed to do the exact opposite. These opposite effects are theorized to be most like due to the involvement of various other neurotransmitter circuits within the same area of the brain where the hyper-excitable responses take place.

The solution?

It seemed to be that the only way this problem was going to be tackled was by maintain a very careful balance between the activity of the CB1 and CB2 receptors. When the dosages were getting to high, then the CB1 receptors were being accelerated over CB2 which removed the normal inhibition that was preventing the upsurge of stress, and allowing it to flow again.

To further study this problem, another experiment was conducted using mice where the mice were exposed to simulated scenarios of stress. Researchers found that when a mouse has faced a chronic exposure to stress, it appeared to have a greater degree of success to the CBD treatment. This further led them to the conclusion that for CBD treatment to actually work on the endocannabinoid system of humans, it was required to keep it exercised or “toned” to improve the positive responses of CB2.

Further Evidence of this was found when a randomized double blinded test was initiated recently using 15 human subjects, of which randomly some were given a 600mg dose of CBD while the other received a placebo. It appeared that CBD seemed to significantly reduce the level of stress when compared to a 10mg does of Delta 9 – THC. CBD seemed to initiate the other receptors such as 5HT1A, including CB2 and TRPV1 both of which were anxiolytic (Fear reducing) response centers.

The overall result of this clinical trial is now the best available evidence to support the logical claim of CBD being a very potent solution to abnormal levels of stress which a great number of people are suffering from out there.

    The other day a friend told me about Marijuana and it’s effects on Stress levels, to be honest I did not believe him and ignored his words! But deep inside I knew that I needed some serious help because my Stress levels were going off the chart. However, after reading this article, I feel that there is still hope and Medical Marijuana might just be the answer to my problems.
