There are four documented medical studies aimed to figure out the health benefits of CBD for sleep disorders and quite frankly, to simply answer the question, “Does CBD promote a deeper, calmer, sleep?

Studies of CBD and Sleeping Patterns

 

Immediately below, we’ll explain the four studies in complete detail.  First, we will quote the results or the professional conclusion of the study and then we will follow up with our own explanation.

Medical Study #1

“CBD enhanced wakefulness and decreased slow wave sleep and REM sleep… these findings suggest that this cannabinoid (cannabidiol) is a wake-inducing compound” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19045957

Cannabidiol Life Explanation:  As you can see right off the bat, the CBD administration in rats during the day or “lights on” period, actually promotes wakefulness. Not sleepiness or drowsiness that is experienced with sleeping pills. However, we’d like to point out that only 10 or 20 micrograms were administered to the rats during these tests. Remember this fact! It’s important in our conclusion and theory at the end.

Medical Study #2

“The systemic acute administration of CBD appears to increase total sleep time, in addition to increasing sleep latency in the light period of the day of administration.” – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23343597

Cannabidiol Life Explanation: The results of this study showed a correlation between CBD and increased sleep time. Additionally, like the previous study above, it established that the rats that received a dose of Cannabidiol were less likely to sleep during the day. Remember when we said to remember the amount of CBD given to the rats in study #1? Well, here’s where it get’s interesting… The importance of the amounts slipped by us at first, but we caught it (and we’re so glad we did).

“During the light period of the test day, the total percentage of sleep significantly increased in the groups treated with 10 and 40 mg/kg of CBD compared to placebo… There was an increase in the time of SWS in the group treated with CBD 40 mg/kg.

SWS means, “slow wave sleep”, which is known as, “Deep Sleep”. So, what does this tell us? Well, if study #1 only gave the rats 10-20 MICROGRAMS, which resulted in induced awakeness and study #2 resulted in a significant increase of sleep in the groups of rats treated with 10 and 40 MILLIGRAMS, with a stronger increase of SWS (deep sleep) for the rats that took 40 milligrams, we can only assume that higher amounts of CBD is what is needed to actually reach the potential of using CBD as a night time sleep aid. *This is our theory, which we base on the studies above.  It is not a medical fact.*
